Metropolis has so many high points

- DARREN COONEY

SOARING into the sky and towering about the sprawling metropolis of Greater Manchester, the Deansgate Hilton is an imposing and impressive building.

Located in the chic district of Deansgate, the Hilton, which has 47 floors, is perfectly placed for shops, bars, restaurants and a wealth of attractions.

Just a walk out through the main doors and you’ll happen across trendy eateries, old school pubs and clothes stores you simply won’t find in Scotland.

Want to travel that bit further afield? The city has trams, buses and trains that can take you to locations including Manchester United’s Theatre Of Dreams, Media Quay and the Trafford Centre for shopping heaven in a matter of minutes.

Want to relax in the luxurious hotel? A leisure centre with a pool, steamroom, whirlpool and sauna will unwind you into a Zen-like state. There’s also a gym and spa with a range of treatments.

After all that lounging around, we headed for a drink at Cloud 23.

It’s right at the top of the hotel. On one side stands a bar stocked with every libation your thirst desires. On the other is a stunning vista that stretches right across Salford and Manchester.

We took in dinner at the Podium Restaurant. The meal was good and the service was friendly and accommodating.

After all that, catching some zeds was in order. The rooms at Deansgate Hilton are stylish and spacious and the beds are comfortable.

Breakfast seems a bit of a speciality. The cooked stuff was wonderful and there were breads, pastries and every concoction the Continent has to offer.

We took in the Trafford Centre that morning. It has every kind of shop selling every kind of ware you can imagine.

We crammed a lot into our 24 hours in Manchester. We could have spent so much more time there – and we will be back. ■ Darren stayed courtesy of Hilton Manchester Deansgate. Rooms cost from £169. Facilities include floor-to-ceiling windows, Living-Well gym, Urban Oasis Spa, Cloud 23 bar and Podium restaurant. Visit hilton.co.uk/manchesterdeansgate or call 0161 870 1600
