CAR CRUSH HEROES

Man rushed to hospital after late-night revellers save him

- JANE HAMILTON

REVELLERS raced to the rescue of a man trapped under a car – by lifting it off him.

They saved the victim after he was knocked down late at night in Edinburgh.

HORRIFIED members of the public lifted a car off an injured man who’d become trapped underneath it when it crashed.

About a dozen people heaved the car to free the man, believed to be in his 20s, after he had been struck by the vehicle just moments earlier.

It’s understood the people ran to help when the man was hit by the vehicle in Edinburgh on Saturday night.

Young and old people were seen heaving the car off the stricken victim.

He is understood to have been taken to hospital with serious injuries but his condition is unknown.

The accident, in Leith’s Great Junction Street, was the second in just 24 hours on the same stretch of road.

The collision on Friday left a man needing hospital treatment for a head injury.

Locals have speculated that Saturday’s horror was caused by the driver losing control and said he was “friendly” with the man who was injured.

One local said: “Apparently the driver lost control and hit someone he knew.

“Loads of folk rushed to help and get the car off the guy who was hit. He looked seriously hurt but no one has heard how he is yet.”

Another said: “It was my daughter’s friends who helped lift the car and rather proud of them all.

“One young lad tried to knock down a certain person but hit his own pal instead.

“A few people seen the lot and gave statements to police.”

In the first incident on Friday night, a man was left needing hospital treatment overnight and six stitches to a head wound.

A friend said: “He’s fine. It could have been a lot worse. Police have charged someone for it.”

Community activist Michael Traill wrote on Twitter: “Serious accidents on Great Junction Street on Friday and Saturday night.

“Thoughts with those injured. Driver or pedestrian error?”

It’s understood arrests have been made in connection with both incidents, however the police were unavailable for comment yesterday.
