STONE Roses frontman Ian Brown sparked fears of a final split with cryptic comments at their Hampden gig.

Singer Brown told the crowd during the set on Saturday night: “Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy that it happened.”

At the end of the set, he remained on stage and repeatedly sang the line: “It’s a beautiful thing, that I say bye bye”, from their track Beautiful Thing.

The Glasgow gig was the last on the band’s current tour and fans noticed that when the band hugged each other in groups at end, Brown and drummer Reni – who have fallen out in the past – were the only ones not to embrace.

Some fans who attended the gig have said it “looked like the end” for the Manchester band, who split up for the first time in 1996 but reformed in 2011.

But there has been no official confirmation or denial of the rumours of a split, which are now widespread on social media.

The Stone Roses pioneered the Madchester music scene in the late 1980s, winning huge acclaim for their debut album in 1989.

After they reformed in 2011, they did a reunion tour a year later.

It included three sellout homecoming shows at Heaton Park in Manchester, which shifted more than 200,000 tickets in minutes.

However, only two new songs have emerged since. TEN people were arrested at the Stone Roses’ Glasgow gig for a range of offences.

Police Scotland said they were detained for public disorder offences and the use of pyrotechnics – setting off flares – in the venue.
