Gove vow was a bit of a whopper
I VISITED the Royal Highland Show on Friday.
As ever, it was a magnificent showcase for all that our rural economy and our food and drink sector have to offer.
But it is an industry which, more than any other, is directly impacted by our future relationship with the EU.
Another visitor to Ingliston last week was Michael Gove, in his new role as Westminster Rural Affairs and Environment Secretary.
Gove was, of course, a leading light in the Leave campaign a year ago.
The same Leave campaign which won in England and Wales after telling whoppers like leaving Europe would see an extra £350million a week for the NHS.
And while he may not have plastered it on the side of a bus, Gove was also full of grandiose claims a year ago about what Brexit would mean for Scotland.
In an interview with the BBC just 10 days before the vote, he repeated his claims that a Leave result would see many new powers come to Scotland, including controls over immigration.
“It would be for Scotland to decide,” how many people would be able to come into the country, he said.
A year on, and he was left spluttering when reminded of that pledge – the best he could muster was that there would be “dialogue” with Holyrood over the issue.
It just proves you literally cannot trust a word the Tories say on Brexit.
