Flit to drop

COUNTDOWN TO THE BIG KICK-OFF Alex: I’ve had enough of moving and battles at the bottom...now I want to lay down roots at Fir Park

MOTHERWELL frontman Alex Fisher has had enough of relegation scraps and moving house.

The former Inverness Caley star has found security off the field at Fir Park and is determined to deliver on it as well.

He spent last season embroiled in a scrap at the foot of the table and even though he chipped in eight goals, including a lastminute equaliser against Celtic, it wasn’t enough to beat the drop.

Fisher, 26, moved to Motherwell at the end of the season and it’s his 10th permanent move across four different countries since making his breakthrough at Oxford United.

He said: “I could have returned to England at the end of the summer and there were a few clubs that ticked a lot of boxes.

“I’ve lived a long way from home for a long time but this was an opportunity I didn’t want to reject.

“I’ve moved around a bit more in my career than I’ve wanted so to have a manager come in and offer me the security of a two-year contract showed me he was serious about signing me.

“I like to think in an environment in which I feel wanted I will thrive. There is still unfinished business in the Premiership.

“I didn’t play as much as I wanted last season but when I did turn out I did enough to show I’m capable of performing at this level.

“I finished strongly and would like to start a full season in the same vein.

“Relegation with Inverness was such a regret. When the pressure is on like that it is not an environment in which you want to be playing your football. We had such a good set of lads we felt the results would come. But when they didn’t it turned up the heat towards the end, even though we pushed to the very last.

“We want to look at the other end of the table and the ambition is to finish as high as possible. I don’t see why we can’t aim for the top six with Motherwell.

“I won’t set out at the start of the season with the ambition of avoiding relegation.

“I’d love to push for the top six. Given the calibre of player the manager has brought in, along with the calibre of those he has kept, we’re hoping for a very successful season.”

Fisher is one of six new arrivals at Fir Park this month, with manager Steve Robinson in the market for at least another three additions to his new-look squad.

He added: “It might take some time to gel as we’ve brought in more than a couple of new faces. It’s a small league and a lot of points are taken off each other when the games start coming thick and fast.

“There’s every chance we could kick on quickly or it might be a slow burner. Either way I’d like to think we’re in good shape and ready for what’s ahead.

“As a striker I just want to get my first goal out of the way as sometimes it can be a sticking point. We have a fantastic team here and some great goalscorers.

“No position is assured so my first ambition is to do what I can to get on the pitch and if I can hopefully then deliver.”
