City sink Celtic to keep title tilt on target

-

GLASGOW CITY rounded off the first half of the season with a 2-0 win away to Celtic – and stay hot on the heels of league leaders Hibs.

City were on the front foot from the word go and netted just before the break when Abbi Grant fired home from 16 yards.

Noelle Murray doubled the reigning champions’ lead in the second half, reacting quickest to a terrific Hayley Lauder shot which came back off the bar – one of four times City hit the woodwork.

Coach Scott Booth said: “We were excellent. We dominated the match and have been getting better and better.

“It is disappointing for us to be going into the summer break just now as we are really flying at the moment.

“All over the pitch we were great. Our pressing was terrific and we continued to cause the Celtic defence problems with some quick and intelligent play.

“Our play deserved a bigger win but to play the way we did and get all three points is very pleasing.”

Leaders Hibs thrashed Aberdeen 8-0 to stay two points clear of City at the top but they have played a game more.

Lia Tweedie hit a double with Rachael Small, Kirsty Smith, Rachel McLauchlan, Abi Harrison, Ellis Notely and Cailin Michie also on target.

Spartans won 3-1 at Rangers in yesterday’s other clash.

The SWPL now has a break until mid-August with Scotland competing in the Euro finals at senior and Under-19 level.
