May will blunder ahead, clinging to power with contempt for the electorate
While we have such abominations as the “rape clause”, May pulling £1billion from her Amanda Wakeley sleeve is a sickening sleight of hand. While Northern Ireland is being wooed, Scotland must now pay the price for a Brexit we didn’t vote for, without the right to sit at the negotiating table. We’re in an unprecedented era of women in power but the biology of the politician beneath the tailored suit matters far less than their scruples. With the exception of Nicola Sturgeon, Kezia Dugdale and Leanne Wood of Plaid Cymru, the women currently in charge are no poster girls for feminism. Yesterday, Sturgeon parked a second independence referendum until after the terms of the Brexit negotiations become clearer and whether in the Yes or No camp, it was the right decision. She has little choice given the SNP lost 21 seats in the election earlier this month. Unlike May, Sturgeon has acknowledged her weakened position for another referendum and Brexit must come first. It is unlikely Sturgeon will be allowed to wield the influence she is demanding but she has to push harder than she has ever done. May will blunder ahead, clinging to power with contempt for the electorate and she will have Foster cheering her all the way. It is a pairing of women of no principle, bereft of conscience and empathy. The money Foster has blackmailed out of May was not about what was best for her country but to drive her personal ambition. The future is bleak and, thanks to May, the future is orange. a.brown@ dailyrecord. co.uk
