Kevinso Wear-y ofBlack Catsjob

KEVIN PHILLIPS has become the latest coach to distance himself from the Sunderland job after admitting his old club’s plight is “worrying”.

The players are due back for pre-season training today but they have no boss after Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes snubbed the chance to succeed David Moyes.

Black Cats legend Phillips has been heavily linked with a Wearside return but the former striker insists he is focused on helping Derby, where he has been a coach since September 2015.

And he’s worried about Sunderland’s future as American owner Ellis Short tries to offload the club to German investors for around £90million.

When asked about the Sunderland job, Phillips said: “I didn’t chuck my name in the hat. It is just natural because of my affiliation with the club. I am contracted to Derby.

“I am delighted to be here and happy with the changes we have made over the last year or so.

“I have managed to stay so I can only speak about Derby at the minute.

“Who knows what is happening at Sunderland until the takeover happens.

“It worries me when Derek McInnes has turned the job down. There is something going on behind the scenes there.

“Until the takeover, I can understand why people are distancing themselves. Any manager will want some money to change it.”
