I’LL GO FOR GOALS NOW I’M STAYING

- ALAN MARSHALL sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

MIDFIELDER Ryan Edwards has set himself the target of adding more goals next season after signing a new contract that will keep him at Partick Thistle until summer 2020.

After featuring in every Premiership match last term as the Jags finished sixth, manager Alan Archibald has decided to reward the Australian with extended terms.

Edwards moved to Thistle from Reading in September 2015 and the playmaker admits he is keen to contribute more in the final third next term.

Edwards, who scored one league goal last season, said: “I’ve enjoyed my time here so far and hopefully it continues, both what I’ve been doing for the team and from a personal point of view.

“Now it’s the next level where I focus on the final third, making assists or scoring goals.

“I’m getting in the right positions and I had a number of chances last season to add to my tally, so that’s one thing I’ll be working on this term.”

Edwards insists the Thistle players are relishing the daunting start they face to the new Premiership campaign.

Archibald’s side begin the season with a trip to Hibs on August 5 before hosting champions Celtic.

Thistle will also play St Johnstone, Aberdeen, Rangers and Hearts within their first seven fixtures.

Edwards added: “It’s a good time to get them. It’s at the start of the season and the league is even tougher this year.

“We’re looking forward to it. To start away at Easter Road will be brilliant for the boys and they will have a big crowd for their first Premiership game.

“Then we’ve got Celtic at home. It’s tough but you can’t get any better – that’s what you want to play in, the big games.

“This league is going to be difficult this year but it’s good to get them early.”
