MYRE WILL STOKE FIRE

- RODDY DUNCAN sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

NEW Edinburgh chief Richard Cockerill believes the “intimate atmosphere” of Myreside can inspire his side to success.

The former Lions star delivered his verdict after the Gunners opted to stage most of their home Pro12 matches at the venue, which has a capacity of 5500, for the next three years.

They will also use Murrayfield but only for big games such as the 1872 Cup showdown with Glasgow.

Cockerill said: “As a squad, we feel that the intimacy of Myreside will bring the supporters much closer to the action.

“That will provide the best atmosphere to drive the players forward on the park.

“Having a home for the club is vital and the team are fully supportive and excited by the chance to play matches at Myreside for the foreseeable future.”

He was backed up by managing director Jonny Petrie, who said: “We have created solid foundations for a truly special fan experience at Myreside. But we also appreciate that we still have work to do in order to make the ground a home for our club and our supporters – the feedback has told us that.

“We’ll continue to work alongside local residents, supporters and our various stakeholders to keep improving the matchday experience, making the ground a fitting home for our loyal and deserving fans.”

Following a six-game trial last season 2016-17, the club undertook a review.

As a result, Edinburgh will play a minimum of nine home matches at Myreside in the coming season with the other “selected” games to be staged at Murrayfield.
