AWOL EFE’S IN LENNY’S BAD BOOKS

- BERWICK ........ 0 HIBS .............. 2

NEIL LENNON is set to haul AWOL Efe Ambrose over the coals as he revealed Simon Church has impressed on trial at Easter Road.

Ambrose was given an extended summer break but the Hibs boss last night revealed he can’t even get in touch with the Nigeria international defender.

And Lenny, who saw his side beat Berwick thanks to goals from Danny Handling and Oli Shaw, has urged the ex-Celtic man to return to Edinburgh swiftly – or face the consequences.

He said: “There’s no sign of Efe so he is in a bit of trouble. I can’t get a hold of him at all. He was given a wee bit of time off but he is pushing the boundaries now.

“The sooner he is back, for his sake, the better.

“It will be discussed behind closed doors so he’s got that to look forward to when he gets back!”

Lennon, who is set to talk terms with trialist Jermaine Pennant, didn’t field Wales international Church but confirmed the ex-Aberdeen man is training with Hibs.

He added: “Simon is a good player with plenty of experience and has played for Wales but is still only 28.

“We are assessing his fitness and we’ll see how he integrates with the squad. He has impressed us but it’s a little early to say for sure what will happen.”

Hibs, who fielded New Zealand Under-20 cap Andrew Blake as a trialist, should have gone ahead after 20 minutes when Danny Swanson was scythed down by Pat Scullion.

However, Brian Graham, captain for the night, blasted the resulting penalty wildly over the bar.

Fraser Murray was inches away from giving Hibs the lead right on half-time but his 25-yard drive hit Robbie McCrorie’s left-hand post.

The visitors finally broke the deadlock in 73 minutes when Handling pounced on a mix-up between Berwick keeper Sean Brennan and defender Ewan Herriot before Shaw added late gloss to the scoreline.
