Del nets newdeal at Dons

-

From Back Page McInnes turned down the opportunity to boss the Black Cats despite the English side being prepared to pay Aberdeen £1million compensation.

McInnes’s new deal is a massive boost to the Reds faithful ahead of tomorrow night’s Europa League second qualifying round second leg against Bosnian outfit Siroki Brijeg with the score tied at 1-1.

He guided the Dons to League Cup success in 2014 – their first trophy in 19 years – when they defeated Inverness on penalties at Celtic Park.

McInnes also steered the Dons to both domestic cup finals last season where they lost to Celtic and has established Aberdeen as the second-best team in the country for three consecutive seasons.

McInnes said: “We’ve still a lot to do on and off the pitch. I want our tenure here to be remembered fondly as a successful period where we were winning trophies.

“I’m committed to trying to bring more success to the club. And with the excellent squad of players we have and the backing of our brilliant supporters it is important we keep driving forward both on and off the pitch and maximise our full potential as a club.

“I love working for the club. Our aim must always be to have a competitive, confident Aberdeen team on the pitch, producing young players and training professionally in a modern facility in keeping with the ambitious club we are. We require the full support of the city and our supporters to help us achieve that.”

The Dons set to smash the 11,000 season-ticket barrier for the first time and chairman Stewart Milne could not contain his delight over the duo’s deals.

He said: “This is great news for everyone connected to Aberdeen and gives us a real boost ahead of the season. I urge the supporters, as they always do, to get right behind Derek, Tony and the team.”

‘Griffiths is always up to something to wind up fans. If the SFA grow a pair it won’t be long until he cops a long overdue ban in Scotland’
