Scam scum preying on lonely OAPs
OLD people living alone are much more likely than married pensioners to fall victim to scammers, a study has revealed.
Researchers found that more than 40 per cent of Scots pensioners believed they had been targeted by con artists.
And 16 per cent of single OAPs ended up paying money to the crooks, compared to only six per cent of married old folk.
Age also played a key role, with people 75 or over more likely to give away personal or financial information.
Keith Robson of Age Scotland, who carried out the study with Age UK, said: “Scams can have a devastating emotional and financial impact on older victims.
“We are urging all older people, and their friends and families, to be vigilant and get up to speed on how to avoid them. If there’s any doubt about an offer, report it to the authorities.”
