Wild about wilderness

-

BBC1, 8pm WHEN this stunning nature series began on Sunday, a bear cub destroyed some footage after “repositioning” cameras.

And presenter Liz Bonnin had already been stranded in the middle of nowhere as she tried to reach the filming location.

This was due to adverse weather conditions (actual adverse weather, not the sort the train companies announce when there’s a drizzle of rain).

So as the live television event continues tonight, anything could happen.

And it promises to get a bit edge-of-the-sofa as Steve Backshall attempts a dangerous TV first – landing on a glacier by helicopter and then abseiling into and underneath the ice. It’s all gone a bit Bear Grylls.

As these huge glaciers start to melt in the summer, it triggers the spectacle of the Alaskan Summer Feast. And Steve wants to find evidence of what ignites the feast and why the Gulf of Alaska is so special. Fortunately for us, we get answers without hanging over a glacier in a safety harness.

As the glaciers turn mountains into dust, it kick-starts a food chain in the seas, which means huge animals are heading to the coast for a slap-up meal.

Matt Baker will be the man in the helicopter looking for humpbacks and orcas off the coast of Tongass National Forest.

Liz is literally going on a bear hunt as she continues her live brown bear adventure, and the team travel offshore to encounter Alaska’s version of Jaws – the salmon shark.

They will also meet the people of Alaska, getting an idea of what it’s like to live in this wilderness alongside so much wildlife.
