Ramsay: I was living the dream at Birkdale
ALL THE DAY’S RACING CARDS AND RESULTS
RICHIE RAMSAY admits he got to “live the dream” at Birkdale – so much so the Scot’s best Open finish passed him by in a blur.
The 34-year-old’s tied22nd finish was better than the six other Scots who teed up in Southport and his finest in seven appearances stretching back a decade.
Ramsay sat fifth on the leaderboard at the halfway stage after braving awful conditions to add a level-par 70 to his opening 68.
And he admits simply walking down the last on Sunday took him back to being a kid watching past greats go for the Claret Jug.
Ramsay, who finished level par for the tournament, said: “It went so quick – a little bit of a blur.
“I just remember Friday was an incredible day – really tough conditions, my ball striking was great and the fans were incredible. You think, ‘Can it get better than this?’ – and then it did.
“Sunday was brilliant with the walk down 18, obviously with the stands being packed and the yellow leaderboards.
“All of those things you see when you’re a youngster on TV, you got to live that. I said to someone I effectively got to live the dream that week so it was great fun.”
The Aberdonian tees up in Hamburg tomorrow hoping to carry his form – which included a share of second at the Irish Open – into the European Open.
Ramsay, who will play for a fifth straight week, added: “It’s polar opposite from last week – a lot of drivers and probably quite a few long irons into the greens.
“You are still going to have to be straight – it’s not all brute force – and there aren’t that many obvious birdie opportunities. Perseverance is going to be a word you hear a lot this week.
“This is my fifth week and the reason is I feel like I’m playing good. I just want to get out there and compete.”
