KARRIE’S DUN WELL

- DALE RANKIN sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

FORMER world No. 1 Karrie Webb bagged six birdies on the back nine at Dundonald yesterday to take charge of the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open.

The 42-year-old Australian leads by one shot on seven under after taking advantage of a dramatic improvement in the weather at the Ayrshire links.

She posted an opening 65 to overhaul Cristie Kerr of America.

Webb said: “When we were warming up it was really cold. I looked at a scoreboard, saw Cristie was six under and wondered what golf course she had played.

“Johnny Scott, my Scottish caddie, is very experienced when it comes to links golf and we work well together. But I also think we got lucky with the weather.”

Kerr, 39, uncorked a vintage performance to card a blemish-free 66 after including a visit to Loch Lomond distillery as part of her preparations.

But despite declaring herself a fan of malt whisky she was quick to stress it will never replace her favourite tipple – a glass of red.

The two-time Major winner is also a wine producer with her own company, Kerr Cellars, based in California.

She said: “I’ve passed the level one sommelier exam and part of the education of becoming a sommelier is that you learn about whisky. So on Monday we visited Loch Lomond distillery.

“I’d never been to Loch Lomond before and it’s gorgeous. It was amazing to learn about the whiskies. We tasted their nine-year signature cask whisky – it was amazing.”

Catriona Matthew carded a 74 and sits one shot behind the bestplaced Scots Michele Thomson and Kylie Henry.
