Just Who are you, Doctor?

TRUST ME BBC1, 9pm

BEFORE Jodie Whittaker leaps into the Tardis to time travel and battle Daleks, this psychological thriller is another reminder of what a compelling actress she is.

In fact, if it wasn’t for Jodie’s mesmerising performance, it would be all too easy to turn your nose up at the outrageous plot.

The opening scene is like something out of Casualty and a medic (Jodie) looks like she’s having a panic attack as she pulls on her latex gloves.

Flash back to three months earlier and we discover the woman is Cath Hardacre, a hardworking nurse, kind, quickthinking and generally good egg.

She even complains to the health trust there has been patient neglect – she wants a better world, people. But of course, this is telly and no one likes a whistleblower, so Cath is suspended on tenuous grounds for bullying.

And this is where the concept gets a bit unlikely. At a leaving party for best friend Dr Ally Sutton, who is ditching life as an A&E doctor to emigrate to New Zealand, Cath finds Ally’s discarded paperwork in the bin.

Because, of course, it’s perfectly normal to throw away all your medical certificates.

Cath decides to steal Ally’s identity and move with her young daughter Molly to Edinburgh to work as a doctor in a failing emergency department. I mean, how hard can it really be? She reads a few extra books, Googles the odd medical complaint. So now Cath is Doctor Sutton – no wonder she was sweating profusely in the A&E department.

The cast – including Sharon Small as Cath’s boss and Emun Elliott as a charming consultant – more than make up for the shaky premise, and you’ll be gripped as you wait to see if the imposter will be found out.
