HAUNTED FOREVER

REBECCA’S TORMENT AS BOYFRIEND’S KILLER BROTHER JAILED FOR 20 YEARS

It was a calculated, intentional attack. My Cameron died in the most cruel way, in front of my eyes

A YOUNG woman who saw her boyfriend burned to death by his own brother says the horror of the murder will haunt her forever.

Killer Blair Logan was jailed for at least 20 years yesterday for his horrific, planned attack on brother Cameron, 23.

Cameron’s girlfriend Rebecca Williams

was lying next to him when Logan, 27, doused him in petrol and set him alight on New Year’s morning.

She watched yesterday as the murderer was jailed. Outside court, her dad Phil read a statement on her behalf.

Rebecca, 25, known as Bex, said: “Cameron died in the most cruel way, in front of my eyes.

“I can only imagine the pain and suffering he would have experienced in his final moments. I wish more than anything that I could have saved him.

“The horror of what happened in that room will haunt me forever. It was a calculated and intentional attack.

“The actions of one evil individual cannot be undone. The length of the sentence was never going to be enough for such a barbaric and ruthless murder.

“Nothing will ever bring back my beloved Cameron.”

Bex wore an ornate necklace to court, designed to conceal the breathing tube doctors had to insert in her throat after she suffered horrific damage in the fire.

She may have to use the tube for the rest of her life. It’s not known if she will ever be able to return to her job as a radio journalist.

Bex said she had wanted to spend her life with Cameron, “a caring, respectful and loving man” who was her best friend.

She added: “He had great ambitions to join the police and was working towards building our future together – a future that has been stolen from us.

“Cameron had a lot of close friends who still struggle with the violent nature of his death.”

Logan murdered Cameron at about 7.30am on January 1 in the living room of their parents’ home in Achray Place, Milngavie, near Glasgow. Cameron and Bex had been at a Hogmanay party and were sleeping on an airbed.

The brothers had a “hostile” relationship and had not spoken since their gran’s death in 2013. Logan claimed Cameron punched him in their parents’ garage two weeks before the attack. The loner spent months doing research on the internet, and studying pictures of burns victims, before killing his brother. Rescuers found Cameron dead at the scene. He had to be identified from DNA. Bex crawled out of the burning living room into the kitchen, put her head in the fridge to try to escape the intense heat, and passed out. Cameron’s dad David and neighbour John Weir went back into

the house and rescued her. She thanked them and the emergency services yesterday.

The brothers’ mum Cathy was woken at 7.13am by the whining of family dog Gomez, who was killed in the fire.

She saw a figure run out of the front door, then saw “orange and crackling” in the living room and heard Cameron and Bex screaming.

Cathy and David escaped the flames but were treated for the effects of smoke.

Logan pled guilty to endangering their lives, as well as murdering Cameron and attempting to murder Bex.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard yesterday that Cathy and David had written to the judge, Lady Scott. They told her they were struggling to reconcile “the Blair they know with the Blair that caused Cameron’s death”.

Logan fled the house after the attack then turned up at a police cordon around the scene, shouting and swearing and asking the officers if his mum and brother were all right.

He told police he had been out jogging and had slipped on some fuel, but he was arrested two weeks later and confessed to the attack. He said he stole the petrol from a garage at a church and hid it in the bedroom

where he spent much of his time.

Logan insisted he only meant to maim Cameron, although he admitted causing his death.

Psychiatrists found that he had some characteristics associated with autism.

But the judge told him there was no suggestion of a mental disorder that woud have stopped him telling right from wrong. She stressed: “You are fully criminally responsible for your actions.”

Lady Scott told Logan that Cameron had died a horrible death, while Bex suffered very serious injuries.

She added: “Cameron was only 23 years old. He was a happy and much-loved young man full of ambition for the bright future ahead of him.

“Even if, as you say, you did not intend to kill your brother, you acted with wicked recklessness.”

Lady Scott noted that Logan had “a recurring perception of being unfairly treated” which “prompted your hostile reaction” to Cameron.

She said he set out to maim his brother out of malice, and added: “You planned this attack for a considerable time. You obtained and stored the petrol and you researched documentaries on fire injuries.”

The judge went on: “You have also pled guilty to the attempted murder of Miss Williams.

“She sustained truly terrible injuries – burns to her face, arms and hands and fire damage to her throat.

“She has undergone, and will require to undergo, numerous operations. She still has a tracheostomy in place, which may be permanent.

“At the time, Miss Williams was employed in her dream job in radio broadcasting.

“You have robbed her of her voice and career, of her future with Cameron and of her confidence and sense of self-worth. She remains disfigured, impaired and in pain.”

But the judge reserved perhaps her most poignant words for Logan’s parents. She told the killer: “I cannot imagine the pain they will forever endure from what you did, losing in effect both of their sons.”

It’s understood the couple visit Logan regularly at Low Moss prison. Neighbours have been helping to rebuild their home.

Logan’s counsel Shelagh McCall QC said her client was racked with guilt and had attempted suicide in jail. He showed no emotion as he was jailed for life.
