Amazon primed for taxing times

-

IT’S all about money this week. Amazon have been slated for paying just £7million in tax in Britain last year, despite their massive turnover and profits.

In Amazon’s defence, they did send more cash to the Chancellor Philip Hammond.

But he wasn’t in, so they left it with his neighbour.

Meanwhile Tesco are scrapping the 5p carrier in the next couple of weeks. Jeezo, if other supermarkets follow suit, the unexpected item in the bagging area will be the actual bags. Tesco will instead offer customers a Bag for Life for 10p.

Or if you really want to splash out, for 20p you can get a jakey to carry your shopping home in his pockets.

This Bag For Life thing isn’t good value for me. I grew up in a Glasgow scheme. My life expectancy means I’ll probably only get another two years out of that carrier.

In fairness, the environmentally friendly bag charge has changed the way I shop.

Now I do it exclusively online and get the guy in a big diesel van to drive from a warehouse 100 miles away to deliver my microwaveable horsemeat lasagne.

And well done to comic book creator Mark Millar, selling his business to Netflix for a huge wad of cash.

In the wake of this, Amazon Prime have now put together a multi-millionpound bid for Oor Wullie. ● THE violence in Venezuela will affect the production of Venezuelan chocolate, leading to a shortage of the confectionary favoured by hipsters and the middle classes.

So at least there’s a positive side to the story.
