SPIDERS INSPIRED BY SPIRIT OF 1874

-

QUEEN’S PARK will be looking for inspiration from the 1800s when they take on Motherwell’s kids in the Irn-Bru Cup on Wednesday. The Spiders, who recently celebrated their 150th anniversary, selected first-team players to emulate a photo of the 1874 Scottish Cup winning side who beat Clydesdale to promote this season’s tournament. Queen’s boss Gus MacPherson knows the game against Well’s Colts will be difficult but reckons wearing the historic jerseys has given his men a timely reminder of the club’s rich history. He said: “One of the biggest draws for coming to Queen’s Park is that you will be playing for one of the most famous football clubs

in the world. Our recent birthday celebrations reminded everyone just how long this club has been here and what it stands for.

“Recreating the 1874 team helps reinforce that as well and it was also a good bit of fun.

“We have selected players who we reckon best match their ancestors in terms of looks. I am not sure if the players agree but they all joined in the spirit of it.”

But MacPherson admits his side must be wary of Motherwell’s Under-20s rising stars.

He said: “We face a really difficult tie against a club who have a fantastic reputation for producing players.

“Ironically one of our most recent graduates Liam Brown could play against us after moving to Motherwell in the summer.

“Their players will see this game as a chance to show what they can do against a senior side and we have to guard against that.”
