From a Sharp exit to medal bid for Lynsey

- MARK WOODS sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

LYNSEY SHARP’S tears turned to cheers last night after she was disqualified – and then reinstated – following an action-packed 800 metres semi-final.

The Scot almost KOd rival Charlene Lipsey as she lunged towards the line – with officials ruling she’d “jostled” the American.

But Sharp will now get a shot at gold tomorrow after qualifying as a fastest loser thanks to a successful appeal by British Athletics.

She said: “I would put my hands up and say I did something but I honestly can’t remember anything.

“I was so desperate to get there, I was ready to hit the floor. I didn’t intentionally run into her.”

But Lipsey accused her of bumping her in the dash to get through and said: “I don’t know which one she got DQd from but I got hit a few times.”

Meanwhile Dina Asher- Smith almost completed a stunning comeback from a broken foot to make the medals in the 200m.

Dafne Schippers edged out Marie-Josee Ta Lou to defend her title before the Brit, 21, was pipped to bronze by Shaunae Miller.

Lorraine Ugen slumped to fifth in the women’s long jump with just one legal effort of 6.72m as Brittney Reese struck gold on 7.02 ahead of Darya Klishina.

Emma Coburn led a shock American 1-2 in the 3000m steeplechase ahead of Courtney Frerichs.
