JORDAN SPIETH insisted he had a great year in the Majors despite failing to complete his career Grand Slam at the US PGA.

And the 24-year-old said if he continues to win one every year, he will break Jack Nicklaus’s haul of 18 titles.

The Open champion broke par for the first time this week with a closing 70 to finish way down the field on three-over. He finished tied 11th at the Masters and tied 35th at the US Open.

But the American, who was seeking to become the youngest man to win all four Majors, said: “My caddie told me walking off 18 today, ‘Hey, just want you to know that’s a great year in the Majors’.

“I said, ‘Buddy, we won one. I understand that’s a great year in the Majors’.

“He almost thinks I’m disappointed maybe with how this week went. But we won a Major. We had a chance to win at Augusta too. The US Open and here, I didn’t have a chance to win, which is a downer.

“But overall, when I look back on the year in the Majors it was fantastic. If I did this every year, I would go down as the greatest ever to play the game. I need to look at it that way and I am.”

The world No.2 finished level with playing partner Ian Poulter after the Floridabased Brit shot 69 despite losing a ball on No.8.

He said: “From the start of the season to where I stand right now is miles apart. I feel like kind of the old me is back.”

World No.1 Dustin Johnson finished his Majors season with a 67 to finish four-over.

The American was in red-hot form before the Masters but slipped and hurt his back in his Augusta home then missed the cut at the US Open.

Johnson said: “It has definitely been a frustrating year but I feel like the game is coming around. It’s close to being really good.”
