EX-GER IS TOP GUN

-

FORMER Rangers player Calum Gallagher helped dump his old side’s Under-20 outfit as Dumbarton ran out 2-1 winners.

The Colt Gers exited the Irn-Bru Cup at the first time of asking against the Sons at the Rock.

The game got off to an explosive start with Aidan Wilson bringing Gallagher down within the first 60 seconds and the striker picking himself up before cracking home the resultant penalty.

Rangers tried to hit back quickly with Dumbarton keeper Scott Gallacher keeping out a Jamie Barjonas free-kick.

As the visitors continued to press for an equaliser Barjonas had a shot deflected wide and Andrew Dallas failed to head home a Myles Beerman cross.

Dumbarton almost grabbed a second eight minutes from the break when another ex-Ibrox man, Kyle Hutton, struck the post.

A second goal for the home side did arrive in 49 minutes when Mark Stewart was picked out by Tom Walsh and the striker converted his low cross.

Ryan Hardie had an effort deflected wide on the hour but the Gers striker had better luck 18 minutes from time when he ran on to a Zak Rudden pass and slotted home. However, the Sons held on to progress.

Dundee’s youngsters are also out after losing 4-2 to Alloa at Dens where Craig Malcolm netted the opener.

Callum Crane doubled the visitors’ advantage with a volley and the Wasps added a third when Iain Flannigan sent a fierce drive into the net.

The Dark Blues pulled a goal back five minutes from the break when Matthew Henvey curled in from the edge of the box.

Henvey then scored from close range with 11 minutes left but Malcolm grabbed his second of the night to seal Alloa’s passage.

Motherwell’s Under20’s came from behind to defeat Queen’s Park 2-1 at Stirling’s Forthbank.

The Spiders opened the scoring when former Well defender Adam Cummins headed home a corner from Anton Brady in 29 minutes.

Ellis Plummer headed an equaliser in 62 minutes and the hosts went in front seven minutes later with a fantastic strike from Adam Livingstone.

Ayr were too strong for Lowland League hosts East Stirling and enjoyed a 5-1 success.

Youngster Leon Murphy blasted home the opener in 26 minutes and Brian Gilmour notched Ayr’s second in 38 minutes.

Derek Ure brought Shire back into things with a cracking drive from 30 yards. But Craig Moore restored the Honest Men’s two-goal advantage eight minutes into the second half. Alan Forrest added a fourth with Luke McCowan wrapping things up at the death.
