Koeman: I’ll be found guilty if we fail with Gylfi

RONALD KOEMAN admits he is under pressure to deliver because of Everton’s massive spend.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s clubrecord £45million signing from Swansea has taken the Toffees outlay to £145m.

Koeman knows the flip side of such hefty backing is he has to deliver results.

The Dutchman is relaxed about this weight of expectation and is happy he finally has Sigurdsson after being priced out of a move for the Icelandic playmaker when he was at Southampton.

The Blues boss said: “It’s always about signings and spending money and with that comes more pressure.

“We tried when I was at Southampton to sign Sigurdsson but we did not have the finance we have now in Everton.

“We have worked a long time to get this deal in.”

Koeman has no doubts the former Spurs midfielder will help plug the gap left by Romelu Lukaku by providing goals and creativity.

He said: “We knew we would lose Lukaku and we need players who will bring productivity to the team. Gylfi’s that type of player.”

Koeman wants to keep spending, despite Everton’s record outlay, and still craves a striker and a left-sided centre-half.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s Europa League qualifier against Hajduk Split at Goodison Park, Koeman said: “When you play in Europe, and let’s hope we reach the Europa League, and in the Premier League you can’t do it with one or two strikers.”
