Wednesday, 11pm: Blasts at house in Alcanar, 120 miles from Barcelona, kill one person and wound 16. Police later say those in the house were attempting to “prepare an explosive device”. Thursday, 4.50pm: Van veers into crowd outside Plaça Catalunya metro station in Barcelona, zig-zagging down Las Ramblas into pedestrian­s for 500 metres before driver flees on foot. 5.09pm: Police tweet about serious incident, asking people to stay away. 6.30pm: Police find second van, the getaway vehicle, in Vic – 50 miles north of Barcelona. 7pm: Police confirm it is terrorist attack. 7.30pm: Man killed driving through police road block in Sant Just Desvern, near Barcelona. Officials later say man was passenger and died of wounds not inflicted by police, but links to Las Ramblas attack can’t be ruled out. 8pm: Suspect Driss Oukabir, 28, whose ID was found at scene, hands himself in to police, saying his documents, used to rent van, had been stolen. 8.18pm: Officials say 13 people died in Las Ramblas and at least 50 were injured. They deny rumours attackers had taken hostages in a bar. 9pm: Islamic State claim responsibi­lity. 9.30pm: Second suspect arrested in Alcanar. Friday, 1am: Seven people injured when group, said to be wearing explosive belts, launch van attack in coastal town of Cambrils. Police shoot four suspected terrorists dead and injure another. 3.45am: Injured suspect in Cambrils dies. Police say one of the injured civilians is in critical condition. 8.30am: Third suspect held in Ripoll, where Driss Oukabir was arrested. 9.45am: Moussa Oukabir, 17, named as suspected driver of Las Ramblas van. He is understood to be the younger brother of Driss Oukabir.

10.51am: First victim named is Francisco López Rodríguez, 57, from Granada. His wife is seriously hurt and her niece and youngest son were reportedly also killed. 12.30pm: Death toll rises to 14 after woman dies of injuries sustained in Cambrils attack. 1.42pm: Fourth person held over attacks. 3pm: Police say none of the arrested suspects had criminal history relating to terrorism, and Cambrils attackers had axe and knives in car.
