£592m LOTTO WIN
Mother-of-two Mavis, 53, scoops the largest lottery win in American history
A MEDICAL centre worker has become the largest single-ticket lottery winner in US history after claiming the £592million Powerball jackpot.
Mavis Wanczyk, 53, quit her job hours after finding out she had won.
The mother of two – from Chicopee in Massachusetts – said: “The first thing I want to do is sit back and relax. But I called my bosses and told them I will not be coming back.
“I am a winner, and I’m scared. But I’ll be OK.”
The previous evening, Mavis was leaving work with a firefighter friend and told him: “It’s never going to be me. It’s just a pipe dream I’ve always had.”
Then she read the number on her ticket and realised she had won.
She said she bought a new car less than a year ago and now plans to pay it off in full.
The winning ticket was sold at the Pride Station & Store in Chicopee, who will pocket £39,000 for selling the jackpot winner.
Shop owner Bob Bolduc said the money would be donated to local charities, adding “We’re happy for our customer and happy for the charities.”
The lucky numbers Mavis picked were 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26. The Powerball number was 4.
She said she had picked them based on relatives’ birthdays.
Powerball is played in 44 states across America plus Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Draws are held twice a week.
