A GRENFELL Tower survivor who sat her chemistry GCSE hours after escaping from the blaze has been awarded an A grade.

Ines Alves, 16, who lived with her family on the 13th floor, fled in the middle of the night with just her phone and chemistry notes before sitting the exam in the same clothes she left in.

She also got an A* in her Spanish exam and gained the highest possible grade, a 9, in maths.

Speaking at Sacred Heart High School in Hammersmith, west London, after opening her results yesterday, modest Ines said: “It’s good. I’m quite happy with my grades.”

Ines missed two history exams, an RE exam and a physics exam in the days after the fire, which affected her overall grades.

She said she initially thought the fire was “nothing major” and she just wanted to sit the chemistry exam, adding: “That’s all I had on my mind.”

Head-teacher Marian Doyle said: “Given that she had a number of exams still to do and in the face of that adversity and that shock, she wasn’t going to let go of everything that she’d worked for just as a result of this.

“It must have been so hard for her to actually come in and do that and try to blot out the scenes of what she had seen.”

Ines’s family are still living in a hotel more than two months after the blaze. They have turned down a temporary home, saying they want something permanent.
