BOLD MEDAL FOR DIVING

ATHLETICS Mo dips in to win farewell race

- MARK WOODS IN ZURICH

MO FARAH claimed he was on a revenge mission as he walked off a winner in the final track race of his career last night.

The 34-year-old was handed a gold watch by Weltklasse meeting organisers to mark his semi-retirement in Zurich.

But he nearly ran out of time in the 5000 metres before an amazing dip finish saw him pip American ace Paul Chelimo in a repeat of their Rio 2016 one-two – with only 0.13 seconds separating the top four.

Mo, who landed the overall Diamond Race crown, admitted he was desperate to pay back Ethiopian rival Muktar Edris for ripping his world title away at the distance in London this month.

He said: “Since then I’ve been resting up, watching Idris, seeing his tactics, what he normally uses. Studying that. Working it out. My game plan was to sit on him and make him do a lot of the work.

“But it came into the last lap and I told myself, ‘Do not give anyone an inch’. At that point I went, ‘Can I hold this?’ I told myself I could. With 200 to go I was hurting. But then at the end I pulled out a Colin Jackson dive to the end.”

It made it a Brit double after CJ Ujah left world champion Justin Gatlin trailing as he won the 100m final in 9.97 seconds.

The Londoner, who scooped the Diamond Race title, said: “I brought it back to Britain. It’s an amazing feeling. I knew what I was capable of. It’s probably the best win of my career.”

Jake Wightman vowed to toughen up this winter in a bid to silence the big guns after the Scot finished seventh in the 1500m final – behind six Kenyans.

The 23-year-old took some big-name scalps but couldn’t smash the African wall ahead as Timothy Cheruiyot bagged victory.

Wightman said: “They’re hard to beat. But I was the first non-Kenyan and I’ll take that.”

Eilidh Doyle was fifth in the 400m hurdles but confessed she’s knackered after a long hard season. The Scot, 30, said: I’m hanging on now really for

Brussels.”
