Conway: I’m ready to put rivals on Worlds mat after time off it

-

SALLY CONWAY insists she’s ready to step things up at the World Judo Championships after choosing to step off the mat.

The 30-year-old landed backto-back silvers at the European Open and Cancun Grand Prix in June, her first competitions since winning an Olympic bronze.

The Scot now has her sights set on another podium place next week in Budapest as part of a 12-strong British squad.

She said: “To start with it was very hard to go back into training.

“But I took it steady to get back up to sharpness again having a clear goal of what competition I wanted to get back for because I didn’t want to rush it.

“I am not comparing myself to how I was before the Olympics when I was in the best physical condition I could have been in and was in a good place mentally.

“I have just been taking it week by week, step by step. I have had to step it up and dig in to know I still had it in me to win those fights when it gets tough.

“Now I am ready to take it up again another level when it comes to the World Championships.” SNOOKER: Ross Muir reckons he now has the steel to star under the TV spotlight as the Scot bids to build on a breakthrough season.

The 21-year-old hit his maiden professional maximum 147 break and recorded the best win of his career over Marco Fu last term.

Muir, who faces 1997 world champ Ken Doherty at the Paul Hunter Classic today, said: “I now feel better equipped to handle the pressure of televised matches and I am still improving every aspect of my game all the time.” CYCLING: Chris Froome remains on track to become just the third man to win the Vuelta a Espana and Tour de France in the same year after extending his lead.

The Brit is 11 seconds clear of Colombian Esteban Chaves after nearest rival Tejay van Garderen – who started the day 10 seconds off the Team Sky rider – crashed twice on stage six, which was won by Tomasz Marczynski.
