Conor’s a king in UFC but even I’d beat him up in the ring

FLOYD MAYWEATHER has been told he will not eclipse Rocky Marciano’s record if he beats Conor McGregor in their Las Vegas bout.

The American can move clear of the 49-0 record he jointly holds with Marciano with victory in the early hours of tomorrow at the T-Mobile Arena.

But the brother of the former world heavyweight king, who ruled the division in the mid-1950s, insists his best will still stand because Mayweather’s fight with UFC star McGregor is “rubbish”.

Peter Marciano said: “I’m sure in his mind, Mayweather thinks he’s breaking my brother’s record by beating McGregor but, in my mind, his record will still be intact.

“Rocky would have been the first to congratulate someone on breaking his record but he wouldn’t have gone to this fight and neither am I.”

Peter, 76, claims his brother, who died in a plane crash in 1969 aged 45, would never have been part of this fight which he feels tarnishes boxing.

Marciano, who still lives in Rocky’s native Brockton in Massachusetts, said: “This fight is rubbish. My brother would have never got in the ring with someone who never had a fight before. It would have been beneath him.

“There are people who think McGregor can win but he won’t even come close to landing a punch.

“The only way McGregor can win is if Mayweather takes a dive and he is way too proud to do that.

“You just can’t justify this fight. It’s not right. It should be an exhibition.

“It just seems like everyone is trying to make a fast buck and to hell with the sport’s history.

“You can’t take anything away from Mayweather. He’s a great defensive fighter but every time Rocky got in the ring, people got their money’s worth. Can you really say that about Mayweather?”
