PLANS for Judy Murray’s “world class” tennis academy have been given the go-ahead by the Scottish Government.

The Park of Keir development has been approved in principle after plans for the Dunblane-based site were initially rejected by Stirling Council in 2015.

The £37.5million centre will include 12 tennis courts and a “Murray museum” where visitors can play virtual matches against Andy and Jamie Murray.

The site will also be home to a golf academy, sports pitches, a hotel and visitor centre and 19 luxury new-build houses.

Furious residents objected to the plans – which were also backed by golfer Colin Montgomerie – as it will be built on a stretch of greenbelt land.

They raised concerns it would increase traffic congestion and would become a gateway for other housing developments in the area after several were previously rejected.

Tennis coach Judy, who lives in Dunblane, revealed her delight at the news. She said: “I’m passionate about creating a legacy from the successes of Jamie and Andy, and about getting more people playing and teaching sport.

“I want Scotland to be a healthier and more active nation, and I can’t wait to start developing the plans with the local community and various governing bodies.”

The Scottish Government called in the plans for a final ruling after the council’s rejection. On Tuesday, Kevin Stewart, minister for Local Government and Housing, said: “I’m minded to grant planning permission in principle – subject to conditions and the conclusion of a planning obligation.

“It will bring strong benefits to Scottish sport, helping in the development of elite competitors, while providing facilities for the community.”

The site will be subject to conditions which include making commitments to affordable housing and ensuring the facilities are completed before houses are occupied.

They must also pledge that no further residential development will take place on the site and have to ensure that the sports facilities are available and affordable to the general public.

But Green Party MSP Mark Ruskell yesterday said: “The proposal will not make Park of Keir a national centre for tennis or golf. It’s about as far away from deprived communities who need local facilities as you can get.”

Campaign group Residents Against Greenbelt Erosion chairwoman Inga Bullen added: “We will be considering how to appeal.”

It will strongly benefit Scottish sport and help develop elite athletes KEVIN STEWART
