The IRA will murder me .. like they did my dad

Wanted man says he fled Ireland after threats from Provo gunman

A THUG fighting extradition to Ireland claimed yesterday an IRA gunman turned up at his door and threatened him with death.

Gary Brodie, 33, said he fled in 2009 after he was warned he had 24 hours to leave Ireland or he would never be seen again.

And he told Edinburgh Sheriff Court he feared ending up like his father – who disappeared in 1994 and is thought to have been murdered by the IRA.

Brodie is wanted for a number of violent offences in his native Donegal.

At a preliminary hearing earlier this month, Brodie launched a foulmouthed rant at a sheriff and court officials, branding them “Fenian b ****** s”.

He spat on a uniformed police officer and had to be dragged from the dock. A second hearing was held in the cells where he once again spat on a court official.

Yesterday, prosecutor Helen Knipe urged Sheriff Alistair Noble to grant the extradition.

She told Brodie: “My position is that you are exaggerating and making this up to avoid being extradited.

“You are just a pest, an annoyance and that was why you were told to leave, if that did indeed happen.”

Giving evidence, Brodie said: “My life had been threatened by dissident republicans without a shadow of a doubt.

“I left Ireland in 2009. Someone came to the door with a firearm. He said to me, ‘Mr Brodie you have got 24 hours to leave or you’ll never be seen again.’

“I knew who he was. He did all the IRA business at a local bar and was like the money man for the IRA.

“My father was up on a murder charge in 1994 and then my dad disappeared. No body has ever been found.

“There were rumours that he had been fed to pigs, incinerated and was buried under new motorways.”

Brodie also bizarrely claimed his life would be in danger if he was sent to Castlerea Prison – where he has previously served periods on remand.

He insisted the jail was connected to an “IRA prison” by a tunnel.

And he boasted that the six warrants against him relating to a host of charges including assault, theft and robbery, were “just a drop in the ocean” and there should be at least 25 in total.

The sheriff remanded Brodie in custody until September 7, when he will deliver his decision.
