Teen car fan dies in smash
A 17-YEAR-OLD driver died after his car ploughed into a parked van.
Car fanatic Abdul Sajjad’s Ford Fiesta narrowly missed at least one pedestrian before hitting the Citroen Relay on a 20mph-limit street in Edinburgh city centre.
Abdul died at the scene in Regent Road at around 9.25pm on Sunday.
A 15-year-old boy in the car was treated for minor injuries while a 21-year-old male was treated for serious injuries at the city’s Royal Infirmary.
Abdul had shared his love of sports cars on Facebook.
In a statement, his family said: “Abdul was a beloved son, brother and friend.
“He was an independent man who worked hard and dreamed big, putting others in front of himself and always making others smile.
“As a family we will now come together to grieve for Abdul.”
Regent Road has been plagued by so-called boy racers for years and locals have complained of young drivers racing in the area.
Police have appealed for witnesses.
Sergeant Fraser Wood said: “Tragically, this incident has resulted in a young man losing his life and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
“We are still working to establish the full circumstances of the collision and anyone who was on Regent Road at the time and witnessed what happened should contact police immediately.
“Similarly, if you have any other information relevant to this inquiry then please get in touch.”
