Failure in education leads to rankings slip

SCOTLAND has slid down an internatio­nal league table because of falling education standards and the oil crash.

Scotland fell from 16th in the list of 32 OECD developed nations in 2006 to 20th in 2016, one of five nations to experience a fall.

Professor John McLaren, who published the study, blamed the worsening education performanc­e and falling income associated with North Sea decline.
