Warning on pregnancy booze ban
GOVERNMENT health warnings that women should have no alcohol during pregnancy are based on “weak evidence”, experts found.
A review of research by academics and medics in Bristol found very limited evidence that light drinking in pregnancy harms unborn babies.
Their report, published in journal BMJ Open, cautioned that it did not mean it was fine for mums-to-be to drink. They recommended pregnant women avoid booze as a “precaution”.
Andrew Shennan, professor of obstetrics at King’s College London, said: “Women should be informed of the facts rather than recommendations of absolute abstinence.”
