Brexit Bill battle won’t go away
THE battle over Brexit is far from over.
Theresa May might have won the vote late on Monday night but the sheer number of amendments being proposed to the legislation shows what a hollow victory that was.
The Tories now face trench warfare getting the Bill through the Commons and then the Lords unchanged.
It is encouraging to see Labour catch up with the SNP argument that the devolutionary settlement must not be undermined by the Brexit Bill.
It is equally encouraging that there are signs of some maturity and consensus emerging from opponents of Brexit of all shades.
That gives hope that an alliance in Scotland can head off a constitutional crisis over getting Brexit approval in Holyrood, and a progressive alliance, between parties and across the floor of the Commons, can see reforms that will rein in the Brexiteers and the worst excesses of the EU Withdrawal Bill.
To the Brexit opposition we say keep talking, keep fighting together.
