Tax hike for leisure centres
FINANCE Secretary Derek Mackay last night refused to rule out plans forcing council leisure centres to pay more tax.
The proposal was among 30 made last month in the independent Barclay review of non-domestic rates in Scotland.
Mackay committed to the vast majority last night and ruled out two.
But councils still face the prospect of higher bills for popular leisure facilities, including gyms and cafes.
Tory MSP Murdo Fraser said ending rates relief for sports clubs and local authority leisure centres “would undermine Scottish Government policy in encouraging active lifestyles and tackling obesity”.
