STEPHEN SIMMONS thought he was standing on the verge of glory but ended up nearly walking away when the rug was pulled from under him.
The Edinburgh ace is gearing up for a shot at the British title against Matty Askin in his home city on October 6 – just months after considering hanging up his gloves.
Simmons has suffered a series of setbacks over the last 12 months following his controversial WBO intercontinental cruiserweight title split decision defeat to Noel Gevor in Germany last October.
The Scot’s performance deserved better but the display should have set him on the path to the big time.
Instead the big names ran for cover and the huge fights failed to be delivered – and to top it off Simmons was struck with a back problem. The
