CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

- FEYENOORD V MAN CITY

PEP GUARDIOLA admits he doesn’t know if Manchester City are any closer to winning the Champions League – despite having football’s costliest squad.

City’s £215million summer splurge took the outlay on their squad to an eye-watering £775m.

Yet ahead of tonight’s Group F opener at Feyenoord, Guardiola is unsure if he can turn that massive outlay into Champions League glory.

He said: “I don’t know right now if we are able to compete. We are in the process of growing up.”

Guardiola is uncertain because City lack Champions League experience compared to his former clubs Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

He said: “The quality at City is the same. The only difference at Barcelona and Bayern Munich is that the players have played in the Champions League many more times before.”

But Feyenoord gaffer Giovanni van Bronckhorst believes City are capable of ruling Europe.

The former Rangers midfielder said: “They are one of the teams who can win the Champions League. It’s a hard tournament.”
