Izzard,who is a campaigner for Labour and has spoken about his ambitions for a political career, said: “It’s a story of love across a great divide, at a time when hatred is abounding around the world.

“Donald Trump is encouragin­g people to be hateful and saying horrible things. Separation, run-and-hide type behaviour is out there.

“A lot of us are saying, ‘No, this is not the way the world should go forward. It is not the way forward for humanity’.”
