Mart’s more smart after learning on the job

- GORDON PARKS

MARTIN CANNING insists he has grown into the job as his Hamilton side continue to defy the critics.

The Accies boss is aiming to build on a start to the season which has included wins against Hibs and Dundee.

After accepting the post two-and-a-half years ago, Canning admits it has been a tough learning curve.

But as he prepared for Saturday’s clash with Hearts he said: “I’m now more solid in my own mind about what I want to try and do.

“That’s something you can’t know when you’re just starting out in this job.

“It’s very much a trial and error process as there’s no real foundation to build from. It’s difficult to implement certain things when you are juggling 150 other things.

“I’m more comfortable in the job now and other aspects of it. It has been a good start for us but there’s still a long way to go and at some point there will be a difficult run to come.

“It’s not as if we’ve turned a massive corner to become this big club that’s going to win every game.

“We need to keep our heads down and stick to our principles. Season by season we are improving.

“Last season we brought in seven players to try and give the young players an extra year to develop but I wouldn’t do that now.

“These young players are now at a stage where they can come straight in. It’s a constant learning process.”
