Deadly Harry banishes Spurs’ Wembley woe

-

WEMBLEY feels a lot more like home now.

This was a fabulous, rip-roaring win for Spurs against top-class European opposition and an absolutely vital one in terms of the dynamics of Group H.

But it was also a night when Tottenham forgot all about the so-called Wembley curse and Harry Kane proved he is right up there with Europe’s best strikers.

His brilliant double destroyed Dortmund and can be the launchpad for Spurs’ Euro campaign on the night they perhaps made Wembley their own.

It was Son Heung-Min who put Mauricio Pochettino’s side ahead but the Korean admitted Kane was the star of the show.

He said: “Harry is incredible, he can do anything. He is one of the best strikers there is, a machine.”

Kane admitted in the build-up to the game he needed to dazzle on the Champions League stage to prove he deserves to be called a world-class striker.

This was the ideal way to start and he said: “Scoring a couple was very pleasing. I try to prove myself against the best.”

Real Madrid are clear favourites to top the section and it could come down to Tottenham and Dortmund for second place so the importance of this victory should not be underestimated.

Kane added: “A lot of people have been talking about how this is such a tough group but we’re here to prove ourselves against the best.

“There was no better way to do that than beating a top Dortmund side. We have to take that forward.”

Tottenham took just four minutes to go ahead when Son cut in from the left and beat Dortmund keeper Roman Burki too easily at his near post.

It brought Wembley alive but Borussia’s response was quick and impressive.

Andriy Yarmolenko played a one-two with Shinji Kagawa before curling an absolutely stunning 20-yard shot past Hugo Lloris.

Spurs went ahead again after 15 minutes when Kane shrugged off two challenges then fired a shot inside the near post as Burki got his angles wrong again.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a brilliant effort wrongly flagged offside and things got even worse for Dortmund as Kane got Tottenham’s third on the hour with a thumping 20-yard shot into the bottom corner.

The only downside was Jan Vertonghen being sent off for a second yellow card as his flailing arm caught Mario Gotze.

Boss Pochettino said: “It was so important to win, we are so happy. It is more than three points.

“The team is more mature now and Harry was fantastic.”
