Prison guard faces shoplifting charge
A SENIOR prison officer yesterday appeared in court charged with stealing food from Tesco.
Ritchie McCaul, of Gorebridge, Midlothian, is also alleged to have had an offensive weapon – a baton – in the supermarket in Hardengreen, Dalkeith, on August 21.
The 48-year-old, who works at Edinburgh’s Saughton Prison, appeared at the city’s sheriff court. The case was continued without plea. Sheriff Frank Crowe set another hearing for next month.
The sheriff granted McCaul – who enjoyed a career in junior football – with bail with the special condition that he does not enter the Tesco shop.
A SPS spokesman said: “We do not comment on individual staff members.”
