SAUNDERS’ SON PACKS PUNCH
BILLY JOE SAUNDERS didn’t clash with Willie Monroe Jr at their London weigh-in yesterday but his young son did.
As Saunders squared up to his opponent ahead of his WBO middleweight defence tonight, Stevie stepped in between them. Promoter Frank Warren put his hands on the boy’s shoulders and Monroe ruffled his hair.
The youngster then hit Monroe below the belt and aimed a kick before being ushered away by security. Saunders Snr later tweeted: “My son’s been taught when a stranger puts their hands on them they don’t know, punch and run away, self-defence.”
Saunders has been told a unification fight with Gennady Golovkin could be next with the Kazakh defending his WBA, WBC and IBF titles in his Las Vegas superfight tonight against Saul Alvarez.
Warren said: “If Golovkin wins, it’s a done deal. If he delivers, I’ll deliver.”
