Stevie: Brechin will want to land starring part

- ANTHONY HAGGERTY

STEVIE AITKEN has warned his Dumbarton side that Brechin will be desperate to steal their crown as Scotland’s top part-time team.

The Sons have defied the odds by embarking on a sixth straight season in the second tier.

But Aitken believes City will want to stamp their authority on the Championship this season fresh from achieving promotion.

The part-time teams go head to head today with both looking for their first league win.

And Sons boss Aitken said: “I am sure Brechin will have looked at what Dumbarton have achieved in the past few seasons and said to themselves, ‘If they can do it then why can’t we?’ This is Dumbarton’s sixth consecutive season in the second tier, which is a remarkable record for a part-time team.

“We are well aware Brechin will probably come here with their own point to prove and this will be a very difficult game.

“Darren Dods has assembled a decent squad and their two draws this season against Livingston and Falkirk show they can play.” Brechin, who sit bottom of the pile after five games, came from behind to take a point against the Bairns seven days ago.

And Glebe Park boss Dods said: “Hopefully we can take that battling form and the positives into the Dumbarton game and post our first victory on the board. I feel we can kick on now and there is more to come from my team.”
