MAN’S BEST PAL

-

movie Cars 3, follows Mason everywhere and sleeps with him at night.

The training is still in its early stages. But Kelly believes the pup is already showing signs of being a great medical companion.

She said: “Mason and Storm are inseparable.

“Mason also suffers from stomach troubles and a few nights ago, he was sick. Storm just walked back and forth until someone took notice. If you don’t, he starts barking. He’s just amazing.

“I’d put my trust in Storm more than I would some adults – that’s how much he’s affected Mason’s life already.

“The support we have from Mason’s school is phenomenal but having Storm there with him will give us even more peace of mind.”

Over the coming months, Mason and Storm will work with professional trainers so the dog can learn and perfect his life-saving skills. He will learn how to detect when Mason is about to have a reaction by smelling even the slightest changes in his skin.

The training team will come up with a signal that Storm will use to alert Mason that he is about to have a reaction, so he can take medication and hopefully prevent a medical emergency.

Once Storm is fully trained, which is expected to be about next May, he will wear a special red coat to identify him as a medical assistance dog and he will be with Mason 24 hours a day.

Kelly added: “It’s still very early stages but I can’t wait to see the final outcome. It will give Mason a lot more freedom and hopefully mean we don’t have any more trips to resus.

“The last time he was there was in February and I thought we had lost him. That was our third time there in 19 months – three times too many.”

Mason is allergic to nuts, eggs, milk, latex, flowers, fish, oranges, avocado, soya, mint toothpaste and paint.

The last medical emergency happened at a birthday party.

The mother of the birthday child had made sure there were only latex-free balloons – but danger was lurking.

Kelly said: “Someone found a balloon from another party.

“By the time we got Mason to hospital, he was unconscious. They grabbed him from me and took him straight to resus.”

Mason has suffered thousands of reactions in his short life. He’s been violently sick, broken out in rashes and blisters and his throat has swelled up so much that his breathing is restricted.

Even the smell of certain products or a change of environment can trigger a life-threatening attack.

His parents have put down artificial grass in their garden, as the real stuff could leave their son covered in painful hives and struggling to breathe.

They have even built their own cinema at home for him, complete with a 94in screen and popcorn maker.

Kelly hopes Mason will make the whole family’s life better.

She added: “It already feels like Storm’s been here forever.”
