47 KILLED IN MEXICO QUAKE

-

AT LEAST 47 people have died after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Mexico.

Graco Ramirez, governor of the central state of Morelos, said 42 had died there, including 12 in the city Jojutla and four in the state capital of Cuernavaca, a city of about 350,000 people.

Mexico state governor Alfredo del Mazo said the tremor killed at least two people in his state, which borders Mexico City, with later reports saying the death toll was at least five.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centred near the Puebla state town of Raboso, about 76 miles south east of Mexico City.

The quake came less than two weeks after another tremor left 90 dead in the country’s south.

US Geological Survey seismologist Paul Earle said that the epicentres of the two quakes are 400 miles apart and most aftershocks are within 60 miles.

The latest tragedy happened as Mexicans commemorated the anniversary of a 1985 quake that killed thousands.

Mexican media broadcast images of fallen buildings yesterday in densely populated parts of Mexico City and Cuernavaca.

A column of smoke rose from a structure in the capital. Rescue workers rushed to the site of damaged or collapsed buildings, and reporters saw onlookers cheer as a woman was pulled free.
