BOB THE BISCUIT

It’s the end of empire as a peckish pony puts paid to record-breaking sweet treat

IT was destined for glory as the world’s biggest ever empire biscuit.

But the proud bakers who planned to show off their showstopping feat at a food festival this weekend hadn’t reckoned on Bob the Shetland pony.

The 17-year-old pony, already famous for thinking he’s a dog, clearly also fancied himself as a food taster when he was invited on a live TV show.

When the show’s hosts were looking elsewhere, Bob began tucking into the 18kg confection, which had been featured in another segment of the show.

The biccy nicker struck in the studios of STV2 show Live at Five, presented by Ewen Cameron and Jennifer Reoch.

When Jennifer spotted what was happening, she yelled out: “Oh, no.” She then joked: “OK, so we have one of Scotland’s smallest ponies eating the world’s largest biscuit currently.”

After the show, the hosts had to explain to the biscuit makers, Clarks the Bakers of Carluke, what had happened.

Ewen said: “That biscuit was to be transported back to Carluke as it was going to be shown off at the Jam & Ham festival.

“Wee Bob was stood in the performance area and wandered over and took a bloody bite out the biscuit.

“I was in shock as a wee pony had just taken a bite out of the biggest empire biscuit in the world. The bakers will have to bake a new one.”

The biscuit was 36in in diameter and took eight bags of flour, three bags of sugar, 16 blocks of butter, ten jars of jam, 50 eggs and 2kg of fondant icing.

Bob became famous last week after owner Stacey Johnstone, 26, from Howwood, Renfrewshire, told how he opens doors to come in the house.

He raids the cupboards for food, watches Emmerdale on the telly and plays with her dogs.
