Woods: I may never play again

- DALE RANKIN

TIGER WOODS last night admitted his playing days could be over.

The 41-year-old, a 14-time Major champion, hasn’t hit a ball since February after undergoing his fourth back op in three years.

He is the USA’s assistant captain at this weekend’s Presidents Cup and was asked if he could imagine not playing again.

He said: “Yeah, definitely. I don’t know what the future holds for me. We’re taking one step at a time, it’s a process, and I’m in no hurry.

“I don’t know what 100 per cent healthy means after

eight surgeries but I’ll try to get as close as I can to that number. Is anybody in here who is in their 40s ever going to feel like they did in their 20s?

“Overall, I’m very optimistic how I’m progressing. The pain’s gone but I don’t know what my golfing body is going to be like because I haven’t hit a golf shot yet.

“So that’s going to take time to figure out what my capabilities are going forward and there’s no rush.

“First things first. Just keep waiting for what the surgeon says. I’m still training, getting stronger, but I don’t have my golf muscles trained because I’m not doing anything golf related.

“My timetable is basically what my surgeon says. I’m hitting 60-yard shots very straight right now.”

Meanwhile, Jason Day wants the International Team to use their underdogs tag to their advantage as they look to improve a miserable record in the Presidents Cup.

The USA have won nine of the 11 contests and the last six in a row.

And with Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka in the home side it is no surprise they are big favourites to retain the trophy at Liberty National.

Day said: “I don’t think we’ve got a lot of pressure because a lot of people are kind of writing us off already but we can win it.”
