Don’t be shy to drive a hard new car bargain
WE’RE a nation of hagglers, according to research by Sainsbury’s Bank’s loans department.
Their latest car buying index revealed that more than 80 per cent of us will ask for a discount – and we’re looking for a price cut of more than 10 per cent.
One in five of us haggles “very hard” – although five per cent said they didn’t realise you could haggle over the price of a new car.
Men are more likely to ask for a discount, with more than 20 per cent saying they would look for a deal, compared to about 15 per cent of women.
Older buyers are more likely to ask for a bargain than younger ones, with a quarter of over-55s saying they would look for a big discount, compared with just 15 per cent of those aged between 18 and 24.
Robert Oag, head of loans at Sainsbury’s Bank, said: “Cars are expensive and there is a lot of competition in the market, so it is always worth trying to secure a better deal.
“If you’re thinking of buying a car, you also need to consider the total cost, including any finance you may need to arrange.
“Choosing the right finance package can make a significant difference to your monthly repayments and the total repayment amount, so it makes sense to do your homework on this.”
Sainsbury’s Bank reckon that it’s important to check the new vehicle tax rules carefully before you buy.
Some pure electric cars remain eligible for no road tax – but this is not the case with low-emission hybrids or combustion-engined cars.
Also remember that you’re more likely to get a good deal on a car just before a new model is launched and that a bigger discount might be available just before the introduction of new registration plates.
If you don’t have the confidence to ask for a discount, try to get extras thrown into the deal.
Things such as sat-nav, Bluetooth or metallic paint might be added if you ask nicely.
Don’t be tempted into spending more than you can afford.
And if you don’t like the deal, don’t buy the car.
